Inspired by the misty landscapes of the Karelian skerries, the sharp geometry of coastal cliffs, and the refined character of Northern Art Nouveau, the architecture of Karelia Kirjavalahti emerges from its natural surroundings.
The solidity of the rocky terrain is expressed through clean geometric forms and natural stone, while expansive glazing captures the atmosphere and openness of the bay.
Accommodating 250 rooms, the complex is fragmented into multiple volumes embedded within the landscape, allowing the architecture to merge gently with its surroundings.
The rooms are oriented toward the bay, and each level opens onto rooftop terraces with panoramic views of the water and the mist-covered Karelian skerries.
The architectural centerpiece of the complex — the lobby and restaurant building — reinterprets the language of Northern Art Nouveau found in Saint Petersburg and Sortavala.
The design combines restrained geometry with stylized relief details, the solidity of natural stone with the lightness of glass, and monumental volumes with a strong vertical expression articulated through a tower and spire. At night, the tower becomes a place for observing the stars — a reflection of the site’s unique quality: skies untouched by urban light pollution.
Concealed within the landscape and barely visible from the road, the hotel volumes echo the geometry of steep cliffs, while the restrained yet elegant entrance building with its tower creates a memorable arrival experience — setting the tone for a quiet, secluded retreat immersed in the natural beauty of Karelia.
Rather than competing with its surroundings, the architecture is designed to support and reveal the site’s greatest value: nature itself. The spa complex continues this idea of retreat and immersion. Guests can withdraw into intimate, canyon-like spaces carved into the architecture, or step out into an open-air pool overlooking the bay.
