Uray is known for the fact that in 1960 the first oil field in Western Siberia (the Shaimskoye field) was discovered nearby. It was also here that the history of Lukoil—one of the largest oil companies in Russia—began. The company’s name derives from the first letters of the oil cities Langepas, Uray, and Kogalym.
The task was to design a square dedicated to the first aviation pioneers of the oil industry. As part of its 30th anniversary, Lukoil gifted the city a monument—an An-24 aircraft, which was used for the first flights to the “city of oil workers.”
The project includes a redesign of the park, new small architectural forms, integration of the aircraft on a pedestal, and a comprehensive lighting system for the territory. Pedestrian routes are shaped according to key nearby urban attractors, including the Kul-Sharif Mosque, the “Stars of Yugra” Sports Palace, the traffic police department, and the road leading to Uray Airport.
The concept is based on the image of a runway, with key dates from the city’s history inscribed along its length. At the end of the runway, the “Oil Workers’ Aircraft” takes off, symbolically directed toward the future.
The An-24 aircraft is designed in the traditional livery of the era when air connectivity with Uray was first established.
The runway also functions as the main pedestrian axis of the space, structuring the primary flow of movement through the site. In response to residents’ needs, the quiet recreation zone includes illuminated swings and ergonomically designed benches.
