“Family” Square
Public Space
Fedorovskoye urban settlement, Leningrad Oblast
Site Context
The square is located within the Fedorovskoye urban settlement in the Tosnensky District of Leningrad Oblast. According to Rosstat data, the population of the municipality is 4,622 residents. The site is situated on Shosseynaya Street, between building No. 13 on Shosseynaya Street and Kindergarten No. 23.
The territory lies within a residential neighborhood, with a kindergarten nearby and a school planned for future construction. It is a place where different generations of residents intersect: from the youngest children to the older generation who remember the former private orchards that once occupied this area.
The space is designed to accommodate a wide range of users — parents and children engaging in physical activities together, teenagers who have created informal gathering spots nearby, and elderly residents enjoying park swings among flowering trees.
The arrangement of functional zones is determined by the site context and constraints related to underground utilities.
Meadow lawn zone with grasses and cereals
A meadow-like lawn area designed for seasonal use: in summer, it allows families to sit directly on the grass, while in winter it can be used for snow play and “snowball battles” around an ice-built structure. A pedestrian path passes through this zone, connecting the entire site. Along this route, an art object titled “Family” is placed, emphasizing that Fedorovskoye has many large families and that the square is dedicated to the families of the settlement.
Maple grove relaxation zone
Adjacent to the meadow and aligned with an established pedestrian route from the kindergarten to residential buildings, a quiet seating area with red maples is proposed. This zone includes seating elements with street lighting nearby, while the trees symbolize autumn as the beginning of the school season. It provides a place for reading, solitude, or informal social interaction.
“Hut with amphitheatre” youth zone
A sheltered gathering space for teenagers, located where informal structures already existed in the form of a self-built tree shelter. The design formalizes this behavior by introducing a hut-like canopy with an integrated amphitheatre. This space supports social interaction, photography, and video creation against the continuous yellow backdrop of the “hut” roof-wall structure.
Apple Orchard
Local residents recall the former private households that once occupied this area, from which several fruit trees have been preserved. Therefore, it is proposed to create an apple orchard in this zone, complemented by swings, offering a pleasant walking and resting environment among flowering trees.
