Murino is located on the boundary of the major metropolitan area of Saint Petersburg. The Devyatkino metro station serves as the terminal stop, marking the transition point from the city to the surrounding region.
This combination of convenient transport connectivity to the city centre and relatively inexpensive land has triggered a rapid construction boom. Competing developers, driven by the goal of minimizing housing costs, have shaped the contemporary urban fabric — a dense accumulation of high-rise residential complexes with isolated courtyards, from which daily commuter migration flows toward workplaces in Saint Petersburg.
The tight parceling of development land, aimed at maximizing proximity to the metro, has resulted in a near-complete lack of public spaces and greenery. As a result, the urban environment has been largely excluded from daily life in Murino, becoming concentrated instead within private courtyards, residential services, and transit routes to the metro.
The degraded urban environment has had a noticeable impact on both the mental and physical well-being of its residents. The urgency of this issue became visible through public protests demanding an increase in greenery and accessible open spaces. Subsequent anthropological research confirmed these concerns and reinforced the need to create high-quality public spaces.
