“Cave” Playground
Siversky urban settlement, Leningrad Oblast
The first stage in the implementation of the master plan for the development of the central areas of Siversky urban settlement focused on its most critical intervention point — the Market Square. Despite its name, prior to the improvement works the site functioned as a chaotic parking area with exposed soil, hindering coherent pedestrian movement and contributing to the degradation of the settlement’s central environment.
The concept of the square is based on the flow of the Oredesh River, an informal symbol of the urban settlement. The movement of the river is reflected in the pattern of the main pedestrian axis and reinforced by a ground-level fountain. The space is spatially divided into two zones: an event square and a recreational area with a children’s playground.
The unique children’s playground symbolizes the beginning of positive change and conceptually emphasizes the identity of the place. It draws inspiration from the red riverbanks of the Oredesh River with its caves and waterfalls. Through play, children can learn more about their native region and make new friends, while their parents are busy shopping in the adjacent retail facilities.
