“Ladya” Playground
Custom-designed object
Kirishi, Leningrad Oblast
The unique children’s playground for the city of Kirishi was implemented as part of the All-Russian competition for the best projects for creating a comfortable urban environment in small towns and historic settlements. The “Ladya” (boat) is a symbol of Kirishi, reflected in the city’s heraldry, patterns, and history. Once, the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks passed through here, and vessels of this type were used on the Volkhov River for transport and trade.
Rising on the waves, the “Ladya” carries young explorers into the future. This type of object allows children to engage more deeply with the history of their homeland through play. We deliberately avoided stylization and bright colors, preserving the authentic historical image of the vessel, recognizing the importance of children’s play and the development of imagination.
Design Process
Functional Program
The “Ladya” is entirely constructed from wood and does not include any foreign play elements, while still offering a variety of play scenarios. Inside, it features a two-level spatial structure. The upper level — the deck, formed as a climbing net — is accessed via the oars, from which children can then descend to the lower level — the hold — with an additional exit through the side of the structure.
Upon completion of installation, the structure received a certificate of conformity with the EAEU Technical Regulations (TR EAEU) and now brings joy to residents and visitors of the city of Kirishi in the new park.
